MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. — Back when their football team was the Aints, New Orleanians dreamed along the same streets in the French Quarter they partied on Sunday night about the day a Manning would do something big to make the Saints Super Bowl champions.

And when the Saints finally won their first Super Bowl title Sunday night in a 31-17 victory over the Indianapolis Colts, a Manning indeed played a major role in making that happen.

But the Manning most responsible was Peyton, not his father,Reggie Wayne jersey, Archie, the Saints quarterback from 1971-82 during the salad days of the franchise.

For the Mannings, Dat hurts.

Trailing by a touchdown with 3 minutes, 24 seconds left in the fourth quarter — an opportunity for Manning to separate himself from every NFL quarterback ever — Manning made a play that will haunt him until he gets another chance to win his second Super Bowl.

On third-and-5, Manning locked in on wide receiver Reggie Wayne, failed to see cornerback Tracy Porter attack the route, and threw it directly to Porter. All Porter had to do was look the ball in and take the interception 74 yards for a touchdown that brought Mardi Gras to Miami.

“It was great film study by me, a great jump and a great play,” Porter said. “We knew that on third-and-short they stack,favre jersey, and they like the outside release for the slant.”

That’s Tracy Porter, legend slayer.

In the NFC championship game, Porter picked off Vikings quarterback Brett Favre in field-goal range with 19 seconds left in regulation to force overtime. This time Porter robbed Manning, who could have staked claim to the NFL’s greatest quarterback ever by winning.

“Porter made a great break on it,” Manning said. “It’s the kind of play we run a lot and Porter just made a great play.”

Porter is a second-year cornerback from Indiana University, a guy who spent four years attending college in the Hoosier state now guaranteed Super Bowl immortality for bringing joy to Who Dat Nation.

“Words can’t describe how much this means,Mario Lemieux jersey,” Porter said.

As much as this will be remembered by many across America as the Super Bowl Manning lost, it will be filed forever in Louisiana as the Super Bowl Drew Brees won.

Brees outplayed Manning and did what Manning couldn’t: Change his legacy among NFL quarterbacks. The championship puts Brees, the Super Bowl MVP, on a course to Canton given his age, ability and accomplishment.

But when considering Brees’ contributions to football in New Orleans, it extends well beyond what he has done in the pocket. When Brees signed with the Saints in March 2006 two months after shoulder surgery, he was as broken as New Orleans. The Saints gave Brees a chance and, in turn, he gave the organization a heart.

Not since Archie Manning has the franchise had a player as beloved.

“Four years ago, who thought this would be happeningour” Brees said. “To start from scratch building a team and a mindset, setting those goals and we could achieve through hard work. We played for so much more than just ourselves.”

Brees completed 32 of 39 passes for 288 yards and two TDs for a passer rating of 114.5 and was the best defense against Manning when he helped the Saints control the ball in the second quarter for all but six plays.

The most impressive aspect of Brees’ performance came in the poise and precision. His longest completion was 27 yards and he never panicked even after the Saints fell behind 10-0.

Many quarterbacks would have tried forcing the game to be played on their terms. The great ones — and Brees now can consider himself a great one — wait for the game to evolve and gradually do their damage. Example: Brees was 3 of 7 for 27 yards at the end of the first quarter then completed 29 of his final 32.

As for Manning, the INT was Reggie Wayne’s fault. Wayne has one responsibility on that slant route and that is to get inside of the DB on that play. He has to put his body between Manning and the DB so that there is no chance of him jumping the route. Peyton has called out teammates in the past, but apparently he took the high road so far. I expect that Wayne’s mistake will come out at some point.

After watching the press conferences of Manning and Brees I can only contrast the demeanor of these two Super Bowl winning QB’s with Jay Cutler. It’s night and day and makes me almost sick that Angelo never even inquired about acquiring Brees who could have been signed for next to nothing and with no compensation to the Chargers.

If you want to feel even worse then compare Lovie to Sean Payton. And Payton is from Naperville about 10 miles from where Brad Childress grew up. Both have more offensive knowledge in their little toe than Lovie has in his body.

The Super Bowl and your article in this morning’s paper accomplished one thing for me: I’m done reading your articles. They are full of empty platitudes and you change every day!! You are a detriment to the Trib. and are no longer worth reading. Manning’s legacy is well established and will be inducted his first eligible year into the Hall of Fame. Brees likely will too. I like Bress, but your comparisons between the two just don’t hold water. Every QB throws interceptions. Of course, Manning’s hurt terribly yesterday and the Saints won. Good! But spare me the junk you throw around. You, seriously, need a time away from your writing to examine your style and approach. Right now you are really missing the boat and miserable to read. I enjoyed this article. I live about 70 miles from Indianapolis and most of the Colts fans I know know very little about their team. There has been so much talk of Peyton Manning being the greatest quarterback of all-time. However, I think an asterisk should be added to the title denoting something along the lines of The Greatest Regular Season Non-Clutch Quarterback of All-Time.

Other than 2006, he and Indianapolis have been notorious choke artists in the playoffs. On paper, they out-match nearly every team, yet can’t come through when it matters. His performance against the Bears in the Superbowl wasn’t exactly stellar and Rex Grossman basically gave the trophy to the Colts.

There is a lot of money invested in Manning which is why I think that many are not more critical of him. I think Eli getting the MVP honors in the Giants’ Superbowl win was essentially because he is Peyton’s brother. He wasn’t the MVP, Justin Tuck and Michael Strahan dominated that game and should have been given the award.

He’s a given to be in the hall of fame, but it should be noted that he simply can’t get it done when it counts.

B: There’s been a lot of research about that. In college I studied psychology, and we did a study about whether the color of a team’s jersey affects a referee’s calls. CJ: Of course it matters. I feel like if you don’t care about being in that discussion, then you’re not going to be in there. I don’t care what anybody says, it’s always team first. But, everybody wants the individual accolades too, so of course it matters to be the best running back in the league. Of course I’d love to be in that category. I’d do anything to continue to be in that category.

CJ: Not really. I’d say I’m a special guy like there’s no one person I can sit there and say I really run like. I grew up watching Emmitt Smith, Barry Sanders and those guys. I liked those guys coming up, but I can’t say there was one guy I really modeled my game around.

CJ: It’s very important because we know there have been teams able to run the ball. Not get like real big gains on them, but been able to grind it out and get three or four yards. We know they know that, so they’re definitely working in practice to try to stop the run and make their defense better. We have to work even harder to try and continue to get good gains on them.

CJ: I just continue to work on the same things I worked on last year. I think the reason they were putting me among those names this year is more that it’s not a sophomore slump. I’m still doing the same things I did last year. Basically, I’m just trying to stay consistent and have a good year and I’m going to have an even better year this year. Just to show that there’s no sophomore slump, that I can still go out there and do the things I did last year even when teams are focused in on me to let them know that it wasn’t a fluke.

Q: How much does it matter to you to be mentioned among the top [running] backs in the leagueour Does it matter to you to be in that discussionour

CJ: It’s like any game if you have 100 or 150 yards and you’re doing something good, the team is doing something good. Obviously the other team can’t stop what the offense is doing, so of course, keep feeding me the ball.

CJ: Of course it feels like we’re 0-5 right now, but we’ll get this team turned back around. We can’t sit here and be like, ‘We’re 0-5. We’re out of the playoffs – this and that.’ We just have to keep playing hard and keep taking it one game at a time. Jose first. ourContreras has been a particularly weak pitcher over the past few years, throwing over 100 innings, but constantly sporting a 4+ ERA. ourIn no way is Contreras a fantastic option, even in his prime he only had an ERA under 4 once and a WHIP under 1.3 twice. ourHowever in the current depleted market, assuming the money is small, he’s a safe signing. ourThrow in the fact that he’s pitching in the National League for the first time (his 17 innings in Colorado at the end of last year don’t count) and there’s at least some upside to hope for. ourWhether he earns a rotation spot remains to be seen, but it’s not a big risk to see what he can’t bring to the table.

Phillies Nation is reporting that Carlos Ruiz has signed an extension to avoid arbitration (despite the fact that I haven’t seen evidence of this anywhere else), so it’s worth mentioning here. ourI’m assuming that Chuuch Ruiz found himself a multi-year deal for two reasons: the dearth of MLB-ready catchers on the farm and his postseason play. ourCarlos certainly has his faults as a catcher and struggles at the plate, but his workman like attitude everyday and propensity for postseason success has made him a fan favorite of sorts. ourI don’t know how many people will be upset when he goes, but most enjoy him while he’s here.

You know why I like fantasy ranking lists like thisour Because it gives you a good idea of the talent levels for different teams. ourObviously it skews the rankings on a player-to-player basis, but team wise you can see talent disparities very easily. ourThe Phillies have 9 guys, the Mets have 6. ourStill a very respectable number for the Mets, but it speaks volumes about the set-up of their current team. ourThey employ 6 of the top 110 players, but don’t have another in the top 200 after that. ourFantasy rankings are obviously different than value or player rankings, but they value a lot of the same things — production wise.

I’ll snip out all the Phillies and Mets prospects and the recently departed Phillies prospects in the Lee/Halladay deals — I know how to give the people what they want.

Joe Blanton just inked himself $24M over the next three years. ourBig Fat Joe avoids arbitration this year to add on the next two years of free agency after. ourI’m still upset with Joe for being the $8 million dollar reason that the Phillies couldn’t retain Cliff Lee and Roy Halladay, but we’ve been over that already. ourBlanton was a solid piece in the World Series run and pitched great last season. ourThis contract is deserved for a good middle of the rotation guy and eats innings on a team that desperately needs it.
